Tanaka Scientific Limited has been engaged in the field of scientific instruments since it was founded in 1901.

The founder, the late Mokujiro Tanaka, was blessed with an entrepreneur spirit and was one of the pioneers in the industry to introduce the latest instrumentation from Europe to Japan and later to manufacture domestically.

The rapid progress in science and technology has demanded the elevation of the technical expertise of suppliers for scientific instruments and as a result brought about a diversified product range. The industry developed remarkably in its size and level of expertise, and suppliers started specializing in specific areas. Tanaka started to concentrate in the area of petroleum testing. For more than three decades, Tanaka has been pioneering in the development of automatic petroleum testers. In 1976, Tanaka released the first microprocessor controlled automatic petroleum tester, which was not only epoch making but increased the reliability and capability of automatic testers drastically. Nowadays Tanaka is regarded as a leading manufacturer of automatic petroleum testers serving worldwide petroleum market.

Since petroleum is an international commodity, international standardization of test method is essential for its quality control activities.

Tanaka has been working on the making of standards test methods for JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) on petroleum testing as an appointed member from its beginning in 1968. Also, Tanaka has been a voting member of ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) since 1982 and an appointed member of ISO (International Standard Organization) TC28 domestic committee since 1983.

Due to the demand of higher productivity in the petroleum testing, laboratory automation systems (LAS) have gained popularity in the industry. Tanaka chaired a study group sponsored by the Japanese Government on the development of LAS. Ever since this study Tanaka has been developing and marketing laboratory automation systems for petroleum testing.
Tanaka has been serving the overseas customers from early in its history,and currently 40-60% of its sales is for export to more than 40 nations.

Since the mid 1980's overseas customers have been served directly by Tanaka and regional distributors. Many of the regional distributors have been factory trained to provide customers with the best possible technical assistance.
