Iron - A Critical Element in the Body

Iron is critical to a number of processes in the human body and is a key component of the hemoglobin molecule where it serves a vital role in oxygen transport from the lungs to tissues. Low levels of iron in the body is known as iron deficiency and can result in anemia and inadequate oxygen delivery to different organs. Iron deficiency anemia can result when there is an inadequate amount of hemoglobin in red blood cells. Iron deficiency anemia is associated with a number of symptoms including fatigue, lethargy, poor concentration, shortness of breath, palpitations, and dizziness.
