 flyion GmbH was founded by Dr. Albrecht Lepple-Wienhues and Dr. Klaus Ferlinz in 2001 as a spin-off of the University of Tübingen (Institute of Physiology). The founders were supported by i.con.innovation.

In 1991, Erwin Neher and Bert Sakmann won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their groundbreaking study of ion channels. In its conventional form, the patch clamp process that they developed is extremely labour intensive and demands a high degree of manual dexterity in order to yield reliable results. flyion has simplified this procedure with its patented Flip-the-Tip? technology, which is ideally suited for automation.

· The Flyscreen? 8500 is a patch clamp robot that performs high-quality ion channel screenings automatically. Several compounds can be tested one after the other.
· The PatchBox? is a cost-effective plug&palay workstation tool that can be combined with existing amplifiers, pullers and software. It is simple to operate and delivers a high success rate in the automatic formation of gigaseals and whole-cell configurations in a standard patch pipette.
· The ChipTip? recording tips for the Flyscreen? 8500 consist of a glass pipette in a plastic casing. They ensure high success rates and allow extremely fast solution exchange within the pipette while keeping volumes to an absolute minimum for the study of the fastest ligand-dependent ion channels.
· The Feedback Microforge is a fully automatic micro glass pressure polishing system for the production of special glass pipette shapes in patch clamp technology.
